Jewellery Reunited is a unique jewellery serial numbering service offered by The Guild of Jewellery Designers.
Users are able to generate a serial number to be applied to items of jewellery (or other engravable items too!). The item is engraved with the number and if lost or stolen and subsequently found, when the serial number is entered in to our found item form, an email is triggered that sends a notification of the find to the owner of the piece. Return of the item can then be arranged.
The web address of Jewellery Reunited is included with the serial number engraving. www.jruk.uk
This depends on which engraving company you use to engrave your serial number so you would need to discuss that with them. GETi in Birmingham offer additional engraving for a small extra cost.
The best method of engraving is by laser as the detail can be really small and discrete without losing the resolution - GETi offer laser engraving.
Unfortunately no. It does rely on the honesty of the finder to a large degree, but there are a lot of honest people out there and they will respond when presented with the opportunity to help return the item to it's owner.
If the item is stolen and subsequently recovered, police will be able to enter the serial number into our search form in order to trace the owner. Scutinising a recovered item of jewellery for distinguishing marks or serial numbers is commonly undertaken and there's definitely a higher chance of getting it back with a serial number than without.
For a relatively small investment, it's a good option to try if your item holds high sentimental value such as a wedding or engagement ring or a family heirloom.
In the event of a payout on a claim for your lost jewellery, the serial number can be transferred to another party, ie, the insurance company. They may or may not ask you to do that but if they do, the option is there and they would then be informed of the find as the rightful owners instead of you.
Your serial number can be transferred to the new owner of the piece so that they receive notifictions for it instead of you. This is a one time option, once the serial number is transferred it needs the consent and assistance of the new owner to transfer it back again.
