Justin Duance Jewellery Ethics

Justin Duance Jewellery use many different types of materials in making our products, including a wide variety of metals such as silver, any carat and colour of gold, palladium, platinum and titanium. We have carefully researched every resource and material we use and are proud to say that all of our designs are made with either fair trade or as far as possible, recycled metals. Both of these have had the least possible level of harm to the environment, whilst also maintaining a fair and reasonable work ethic with maximum equality and safety for those involved with the production of materials and the process - from raw materials to finished piece.

If you have a preference for any of the options below regarding the choice of metal, gemstones or wood to be used in creating your piece, just fill out the form on the Contact Page and let us know your requirements.

Recycled Metal:

This is our first choice when making any of our jewellery - we prefer to use recycled metals (or occasionally eco-friendly metals) rather than support the extraction of more materials in costly and environmentally damaging methods, and thus hope to limit our impact on the environment.

Your Metal:

We are more than happy to use your own metal in your jewellery – this not only ensures that we are reducing our own effect on the mining industry and its impact on the environment, but also allows you to recreate a beloved piece of jewellery in a new and personal design.

Fairtrade Metals:

On request, we can use Fairtrade certified gold or silver. This certification enables us to offer our customers the guarantee of a product which has been responsibly mined. Unless asked to use fair trade metals, we will use recycled metal to make your piece.

“Fairtrade certified gold is the world’s first independent ethical certification system for gold and silver. By buying Fairtrade you are making a difference to the lives of small scale artisan miners and their communities. Buying Fairtrade gold makes a real difference to the lives of miners, their families and communities.”

 Justin Duance gemstones

We do our best to make sure all the gemstones we use in our jewellery are responsibly sourced and conflict free.

We endevour to ensure that all of our diamonds are ethically and economically gathered - where possible we prefer to trace the stone back to its mine of origin, however we also use UK supplied diamonds.

Australian diamonds – each of which has total transparency and traceability in the supply chain – all the way back to its individual mine of origin. Australian diamonds of a higher quality than 0.4cts are supplied with their own Origin Australia certificate.

“Our company values ethically, socially and environmentally responsible diamond and gem products. That is that we source products mined peacefully, where care is taken to support and provide for the social conditions of workers, and the local community. That mining companies we deal with have environmental rehabilitation practises in place. And that they report truthfully to Governments and the Public, and pay taxes and royalties transparently.”

UK supplied diamonds – An unspecified proportion of UK supplied diamonds are recycled. This term refers to all the diamonds that have come in a full circle and have returned to the diamond industry for re-distribution, meaning that there has been no further impact to the environment or the conflict diamonds trade when using these stones. For other diamonds sourced from these suppliers, please see their conflict free statement below:

"For any product fabricated from rough diamonds mined from 1st January 2003 onward, the seller warrants that the diamonds have been purchased from legitimate sources and not involved in funding conflict and are in compliance with United Nations Resolutions. The seller hereby guarantees that the diamonds are conflict free, based on personal knowledge and/or written guarantees provided by the supplier of these diamonds. For any product fabricated from rough diamonds mined prior to 1st January 2003, the seller warrants that conflict diamonds will not be knowingly sold and that, to the best of their ability, will undertake reasonable measures to help prevent the sale of conflict diamonds in this county. All diamonds are natural and free from treatment."

Unless otherwise requested we prefer to use our Australian diamonds as these are certified. For larger diamond commissions we will discuss with you personally your preferences regarding sourcing the stone.

Other gemstones – all of our other precious gemstones have been responsibly sourced from conflict free zones to the best of ours and our supplier’s knowledge. However, if you would rather supply us with your own gemstones we will be more than happy to use them instead.

Salvaged Woods

Each wood we use has been chosen for its unique colour, patterned grain or traditional symbolism.

We are careful to make sure that each piece is sourced ethically and sustainably and we do not support the reduction of endangered species or contribute to industries that acquire their wood through environmentally damaging methods such as deforestation.

When we can, we try and use reclaimed wood that has a history or an interesting story. We’ve used offcuts from local tree surgeons, parts of antique furniture, refurbished ships, doors, tables and beams.

We are also happy to use your own wood to give your piece a completely personal touch. Simply fill out the Contact Form letting us know you’d like to do so.
