Hold Your Horse

My name is Dawn Farrington and I'm based in Bridgnorth in Shropshire where I've lived for over 30 years.

For as long as I can remember I’ve enjoyed trying all sorts of different crafts – Macramé, Spinning, Cake decorating, Bobbin lace making, Crochet, Knitting, Tatting, Candle making, Embroidery, Quilting……… Having said that I came to jewellery making via cake decorating. A friend asked me to go with her to night school and one of the skills which I learned was making sugar flowers. A little while later I came across Silver Clay and a lot of the techniques involved in my sugar work transferred well to this. From this 'Prime Elements' was born.

As part of the progression I revisited macramé and that led me to try Kumihimo braiding (a Japanese style of braiding). I have tried all sorts of materials from the normal rattail silks through horse hair and chain – I figure if it bends it braids! These experiments with horse hair resulted in me starting to make pieces for friends and family and then Hold Your Horse took on a life of it's own.

At Hold Your Horse I specialise in jewellery, and more, to help you keep your memories close. Most of my work is with horse hair and uses the art of Kumihimo braiding but the range is constantly growing as people ask me for different things. I hand-make all of the braids myself, I count each hair to ensure that the braids are just how they should be and to allow for the fact that hairs are not all the same. My range now also includes Sterling Silver pieces which are set with resin to keep memories safe. These enable me to add pet hair or horse hair which would be too short to braid.

The Shift in Global Marketplaces

What's been quietly lost in the rush to scale.

Loss of Originality

Large online marketplaces have shifted toward mass-produced, generic, factory-line products, making it difficult to find unique, handmade items.

Quality Concerns

Relaxed verification standards on major platforms have led to issues with material integrity, such as fake silver, cheap base metals, and chipping platings.
